TPS Alliance reacts to Senate Runoff results in Georgia
“The path towards achieving a permanent residency for over 400,000 TPS families is now more clearer than ever before.”
Nationwide- In response to the Senate runoff election results in Georgia, which will officially give Democrats control of the US Senate, Teofilo Martinez of the National TPS Alliance made the following statement:
“Before January 5, we were making stops in Atlanta, Norcross, Dalton, and several other cities in Georgia to support the effort of motivating US citizens of our immigrant communities to vote in what was yet another crucial election for our fight. The news in Georgia is a result of our work and of so many other black, brown, and immigrant organizers, phone bankers and canvassers.
The path towards achieving a permanent residency for over 400,000 TPS families is now more clearer than ever before. We may have opened the playing field in our favor but the fight is still far from finished. We may have successfully changed the balance of power in a more favorable direction for our struggle, but this does not mean that we can now sit back and expect to see a permanent residency in the coming months. We must continue to organize our communities- not only in Georgia, but across the country.
We must hold those in power accountable and demand that they deliver on their promises. We have been in this position before but this time around, we are more organized and will not tolerate inaction from leaders who have made campaign promises to stand for immigrant justice. We do not want to hear any excuses, we now expect the permanent residency we have so rightfully deserved for almost 20 years.
So to the new US Senate, congratulations. We will see you in Washington DC!” – Teofilo Martinez, TPS Holder, Georgia TPS Committee
