At the Last Minute, the Biden Administration Extends TPSfor El Salvador, Venezuela, Ukraine, and Sudan

National TPS Alliance Calls for Rapid Action to Protect Other Nations

Nationwide –This morning, in the final days of the Biden Administration, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for one of its largest beneficiary populations, El Salvador, as well as Venezuela, Ukraine, and Sudan. Protections for nearly 190,000 Salvadorans, originally set to expire on March 8, have now been extended until Sept. 9, 2026, providing work permits and protection from deportation for an additional 18 months.  TPS for Venezuelans, Ukrainians, and Sudanese now extends through October 2026.

Members of the National TPS Alliance Issued the Following Statements:

“We are glad the Biden Administration has committed to protecting the citizens of four troubled countries, including 190,000 Salvadorans who have worked and contributed to this country for decades. Thanks to the organized efforts of the National TPS Alliance and our allies, we have achieved this extension. However, this is just one step. Citizens of Honduras and Nicaragua,  among other countries, deserve TPS extensions also, and they are still waiting. Like other immigrants, they will face great danger when the next president takes office. The current administration needs to protect them, too.” — Jose Palma, spokesperson and coordinator for the National TPS Alliance

“Just weeks ago, we were on a hunger strike, calling on the Biden Administration to extend and redesignate TPS before the holidays. Unfortunately, we did not have that peace of mind during the holidays. While we welcome this extension for one of the largest TPS populations, the battle continues to protect thousands of brothers and sisters from other countries who are still waiting for an extension.” — Soledad Miranda, Salvadoran TPS holder

“As a Honduran TPS holder, today we celebrate the extension of TPS for Salvadorans, Venezuelans, Ukrainians, and Sudanese—an achievement that has taken years of organizing and effort. However, more than 600,000 migrants from countries like Honduras, Nepal, and others are still waiting for the same protection. We cannot stop now. The National TPS Alliance will continue to fight until all countries with TPS receive an extension, and the right to permanent residency.” — Mardoel Hernandez, Honduran TPS holder

The National TPS Alliance is a grassroots immigrant rights organization, advocating for permanent residency and equal rights for beneficiaries of Temporary Protected Status (TPS)
