LOS ANGELES, Feb. 20 — Members of the National TPS Alliance, including the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON), and the Central American Resource Center, Los Angeles (CARECEN-LA), today condemned the Department of Homeland Security’s decision to vacate the Biden administration’s decision to extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for more than 500,000 Haitian immigrants in the United States.
Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem announced Thursday that she was pulling back a decision by President Biden’s DHS Secretary to extend TPS for Haiti through February 2026. Her decision may mean that Haitians lose their protected status – which authorizes them to live and work without fear of deportation.
The following is a statement from José Palma, spokesperson and coordinator for the National TPS Alliance:
“This is truly cold-blooded, even for this lawless administration. Ripping away this humanitarian relief and placing hundreds of thousands of people in danger of deportation back to a country that has been torn apart by violence, lawlessness and instability – how can they live with themselves? They know these migrants cannot safely return to Haiti.
“This Administration outrageously lied about Haitian immigrants in Ohio “eating dogs and cats.” Now they are adding grievous injury to that insult.”
“We sued today in federal court to stop the Administration from ending Venezuelans’ TPS. We won’t stop fighting on behalf of Venezuelans, Haitians and every one of the nearly one million TPSianos whose safety and futures are at risk.”
“The United States has brought shame to itself by turning its back on immigrants in danger. Haitians like any other TPS holders are our neighbors and deserve the opportunity to thrive in this Country”
