BREAKING: DHS Announces TPS Designation for Ukraine
(Massachusetts) Today, the Department of Homeland Security has officially announced an 18 month Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation for Ukraine, in the midst of its ongoing conflict with Russia which has forced over a million of its citizens to seek refuge in other countries. The designation will protect approximately over 20,000 Ukrainian migrants currently residing in the United States as of March 1st, 2022.
In response to the recent news, Doris Landaverde of the National TPS Alliance released the following statement:
“This is great news even if it is long overdue. It is necessary but still not sufficient. We hope President Biden takes additional action, and more swiftly, to assist the millions of Ukrainian refugees fleeing for their lives. The days ahead will be the measure of President Biden’s presidency. He has the legal, political, and moral authority to defend immigrant and refugee rights, and we hope and pray that he summons the courage at a pivotal moment to do the right thing. He can turn the tide on Trumpism once and for all, or he can succumb to it. Millions of lives and his legacy depend on the decisions he makes in the hours and days ahead. Biden must continue to lead the way in protecting migrants and refugees in this moment of ongoing worldwide crisis and conflict.”– Doris Landaverde, TPS Holder, National Spokesperson for the National TPS Alliance
