BREAKING: National TPS Alliance Wins 15 Month TPS Automatic Extension
Washington DC- Today, in a document scheduled to be officially published tomorrow September 10, 2021, the Federal Register has announced a 15 month automatic extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for all current beneficiaries of El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Haiti, Nepal and Sudan. This is a result of the ongoing lawsuit (Ramos V. Mayorkas) between plaintiffs representing TPS families and the Biden administration. The renewal will be automatic, free of charge and current TPS holders will not need to re-register.
In response to this news, members of the National TPS Alliance made the following statements:
“This decision flowing from litigation, organizing, and advocacy directed from TPS holders themselves is proof that we are exercising political rights and deserving of political equality. Enough already! We shouldn’t have to wait on pins and needles refreshing federal registries. We deserve political equality. We deserve green cards. Congress, let’s get it done! – Elsy Flores-Ayala, TPS Holder from Washington DC, Plaintiff in Ramos V. Mayorkas, Member of the Nelsy Umanzor TPS Committee
“Let us be clear, that this is still not a victory and we will only be celebrating until the Biden administration can finally move us past the nightmare our families have faced over the past four years. We continue to wait for a full re-designation and expansion of the TPS program which would benefit millions of migrants and refugees. We are also expecting that this will finally be the year where congress delivers on long awaited immigration reform.”–Oscar Rodriguez, TPS Holder from New York, Coordinator for New York City TPS Committee
“The budget reconciliation process which includes legalizations for TPS holders, Dreamers, farmworkers, and essential workers, is now the closest we have ever arrived to our goal of permanent residency. There is no question that we are currently on the road to victory but if we want this to become a reality, it is imperative that we fight harder than ever before. On September 20th, TPS families from across the country will be returning to march on the streets of Washington DC, to make legislators aware that we will not be used as political pawns, we deserve the right to a seat at the negotiation table, and our contributions to this country have earned us the right to remain permanently. Our Lives Are Not Temporary! We need Residency NOW!”-Claudia Lainez, TPS Holder, Regional Organizer for the National TPS Alliance
